This past week has been extremely busy as I moved out of my apartment and into a house. Anyone with experience moving knows how crazy it can be, even when nothing goes wrong.

I moved around a lot when I was younger, so the idea of moving isn’t a big deal to me. However, it doesn’t make the process any less stressful. Packing up everything you have and moving to a new place has its own complications like inclement weather, things breaking, and more.

While situations like that aren’t ideal, it’s pretty easy to move past it and not worry for too long, but there are some other things that can happen that will stay with you even when you’re done moving.

On the very first night in my new home, there was an attempted break-in. I came back to the house after taking a trip to grab stuff from my old apartment when I discovered that the front door had been tampered with. Someone must’ve tried their luck, and fortunately failed, because there was a debit card that had been wedged into the door.

After a moment of shock and trying to figure out what happened, we immediately called the non-emergency police line and told them what happened. They sent out an officer, we made a report, and they said they’d document what happened and let the officers that live in the area know so they can keep an eye out.

I was relieved that the LPD handled the situation so well, but it didn’t stop me from being afraid. That night I found it hard to sleep, concerned by every random sound, paranoid that someone might try to get in again.

Fortunately, there haven't been any more issues, and we do have a security system in place, so I feel much better now. However, it still has me on edge.

If you or a loved one experience an attempted break-in or any other concerning activity like this, please contact the LPD on their non-emergency line and document the incident.
