According to Roadsnacks.com, Lubbock ranks as the no. 12 most dangerous city in America -- more dangerous than Houston, New Orleans, Miami and Chicago to name a few.

So what makes Lubbock so more dangerous than other cities that are known for being dangerous? Property crimes.

Lubbock's per capita property crime rate is through the roof at an appalling 2,393 crimes per 100,000 people. That means in 2013, about 1 in 40 people were the victim of property crime in Lubbock. (I was one of those victims in 2017.)

As far as violent crime is concerned, Lubbock leaves something to be desired as well, with 528 violent crimes per 100,000 people. This means that about 1 in 190 people were the victim of violent crimes. However, that number was lower compared to many other cities with a similarly high danger ranking. It really is property crime that shot Lubbock up to the top of this list.

The Lubbock Police Department has its largest force in years to help combat this problem. However, we all must be good neighbors and keep an eye out for suspicious activities. Get to know your neighbors, their cars, etc. My across-the-street neighbor and my next door neighbor have both been great allies in protecting my home (and for returning my stupid dog on occasion), and I am grateful for them.

Another great way to be part of the solution is to follow Lubbock Police Department's Facebook page. They frequently release camera footage of property theft in action. They need the community's help to identify these culprits.
