Something that I've always said as a driver is that I trust myself, but I don't trust other drivers.

I just recently got into my very first accident, and it's a perfect example of why I don't trust other drivers. I was simply driving through a parking lot when the car I was starting to pass to my left started backing out. There were no cars parked next to them, so they should have seen me coming, but I figured they just didn't look so I stopped my car and give a little honk. I was hoping they would notice me after that, but they didn't and continued backing up.

I realized that I didn't have enough time to try to back up or pull forward to get out of the way, so I stayed at a standstill and blared my horn. I was sitting there just wishing that the driver would realize what they were doing and stop backing into me. Of course, they didn’t stop and ran right into the side of my car.

You know that slow-motion feeling when stuff like that happens? The ‘they are really going to hit me’ thoughts swirling in your head? Even after they make contact, you're just in shock that it actually happened. How could someone be so oblivious to back right into you when you're blaring your horn and they have nothing blocking them from seeing your car?

The elderly woman that backed into me finally got out and walked over to my car. As the back of her car is wedged to the side of mine, she started coming up with excuses as to why the accident wasn't her fault. She tried telling me I was driving the wrong way, and apparently she couldn’t hear me honking because her grandson turned on the radio.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, especially with the young child in her passenger seat. I just really wish people would watch where they are going. There was absolutely no reason for her to not know I was there. If she simply took one second to look in her mirrors, she would have seen my car right behind her.

I’m sure many of you can relate to falling victim to other's mistakes and maybe find some comfort in knowing you aren’t the only one that these things happen to. If anything, please take this story as a reminder to drive safe and be aware of your surroundings. You don’t want to be the person that backs into someone's car because you weren't paying attention.
