Lubbock Man Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Almost $700K Worth of Stolen Checks
On Thursday, July 29th, a Lubbock man pleaded guilty in federal court to embezzling almost $700,000 worth of stolen checks.
KAMC News reports that on April 29th, 2021, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant for a home in the 3200 block of 53rd Street. Inside that home, officers found the suspect, 41-year-old Sheon Anthony Polk.
DPS agents at some point contacted the victim, who hasn't been publicly identified. The victim said that he didn't know Polk, and on top of that, didn't give him permission to possess the check, which had the words "United States Treasury" erased from the "pay to the order of line." Agents also found 2 checks where the "pay to the order of line" was forged to the original payee as "Sheon Polk."
In total, investigators found a total face value of 264 stolen personal and business checks worth close to $700,000 inside Polk's home. One of these checks was to the Internal Revenue Service, and the exact amount written was $27,642.
If Polk's plea deal is accepted by a judge, he will be sentenced to a maximum of 5 years in prison and will need to pay a fine of up to $250,000.
