A Texas Tech football player is on the mend and out of the ICU at University Medical Center following a weekend shooting in Lubbock.

John Scott III was injured in a shooting during a pool party at Park East Apartments Saturday night, April 27th. A second person, 19-year-old Kiana Pipkins, was also injured. Her status is currently unknown, but she was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

According to a statement from Matthew Dowdy, Associate Director for Athletics Communications at Texas Tech University, Scott remains at UMC, but was moved from ICU on Monday.

Other student-athletes were present at the party and saw Scott and Pipkins get shot, Dowdy confirmed. The school is offering counseling services to those people.

Matt Wells, Texas Tech's new head football coach, said the team will support Scott during his recovery.

"We were glad to learn John had been released from the ICU yesterday," Wells said in a statement via Texas Tech Athletics. "We told our players during a team meeting, and their faces immediately brightened up as they looked forward to seeing their teammate and friend. Our program will continue to support John and his family as he begins his recovery, and we are thankful for the quality of care he has received since Saturday. We ask all Red Raiders to please keep John and his family in their continued thoughts and prayers."

Not one day after the shooting, the suspect, 24-year-old Asia Jackson, turned himself in to the Lubbock Police Department. He was charged with Aggravated Assault.
