College basketball fans across Texas were shocked to hear the news of Chris Beard’s reported arrest on a third-degree felony assault charge early this morning.

Circulation of this news lead Texas Tech and Texas fans alike to have mixed reactions. Shock, disappointment, and disgust are all appropriate responses, but far too many people decided to make fun of the situation.

Just so we’re clear, it is unacceptable to mock a situation like domestic violence. Beard’s charges are based on reportedly strangling a family member, and making jokes about him ‘choking’ during games is tasteless and disturbing. There is a potential victim involved in all of this, and they deserve peace without their misery being exploited as some sort of joke.

Thankfully, there are plenty of people out there who agree that this is no laughing matter.

Many people are also on the same page that Beard should be terminated if found guilty of these charges.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there are resources out there to find help. Thehotline.org has a variety of resources that can potentially save a life. There are call, chat, and text features to speak with a representative who can help. There are also resources to help plan for safety, identify abuse, support others, and find local resources.

If Beard is found guilty, my heart goes out to the victims involved and I hope they find the help and peace they deserve.
