The Houston Texans have released veteran wide receiver Jacoby Jones.

The move will save the Texans about $2.5 million under the salary cap.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Jones after Houston spent two of its 2012 draft picks on wide receivers, snatching up Ohio States DeVier Posey in the third round and Keshawn Martin in the fourth round.

The Texans also signed two undrafted free agents in Dwight Jones and Jerrell Jackson.

“We’ve added a couple of receivers to our team," Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday in his office at Reliant Stadium. "We’ve got a couple of kids that we think a lot of, Lester Jean being number one, and then also a lot of it’s about doing right Jacoby – our football team but doing right by him, too. [General manager] Rick [Smith] and I talked about it, and he’s handled himself with class."

A third-round pick in 2007, Jones caught 31 passes for 512 yards and two touchdowns last season.
