High School Football Is Back in the Lubbock Area
There's plenty of football to be had in the City of Lubbock with Lubbock ISD, Frenship, Cooper, Lubbock Christian, Trinity and the myriad of local schools in the immediate area. The Friday night mayhem got started this week, and there was plenty of action to go around.
I say Friday night, but the action actually got started Thursday night when the Monterey Plainsmen beat Odessa High 32-27 in an incredible start to the 2021 season.
On Friday night, the Estacado Matadors got some revenge on the Midland Greenwood Rangers after having their season ended by them a couple seasons in a row. The Matadors flexed their defensive muscle, winning 16-7.
Frenship and Coronado played each other, meaning only one team could start 1-0. That team was Frenship, who overcame a 14-point deficit to beat Coronado, 28-26. Here's Frenship coach Jay Northcutt with Chance Chambers and 806HSSC:
The Cooper Pirates picked off the Andrews Mustangs five times in their shutout victory, 27-0.
The Lubbock High School squad started tough in Borger, but fell 28-14 in their 2021 opener. Meanwhile, the Lubbock Christian Eagles tamed the Bobcats of Smyer 49-0 to start their season with a win.
Elsewhere in TAPPS, New Deal would take care of Trinity Christian 41-7, Hermleigh hammered All Saints 51-6, and Loop lassoed Christ the King 31-22.
Some other local scores include Shallowater falling to Abernathy 28-16, Snyder winning the Tiger Battle against Slaton 29-8, Idalou beating Denver City 25-0 and Ropes handling Lockney 31-7.
Perhaps the game of the week though was Levelland and Plainview, where former Red Raider Lyle Leong won his first game as the head coach of the Lobos 27-26 on the final play of the game.
