Double T Varsity Club Announces Passing of Oldest Letterwinner
The Double T Varsity Club announced on Monday afternoon the passing of a Texas Tech legend and the oldest living athlete, J.B. White.
Double T announced via social media, "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our oldest letterwinner and former Red Raider Basketball player. J.B. "Whizzer" White passed away April 27, 2020 at 99 1/2 years old."
According to his bio, "Whizzer" was a team captain for Texas Tech basketball and on the first Texas Tech team to ever beat the University of Texas in any sport.
White then went on to become an officer in the US Navy and served in the pacific during WWII. He was also an avid golfer and one of the charter members of the Hillcrest Country Club. White played in numerous area golf tournaments and qualified for three National Senior Amateur tournaments, two Senior National Open Tournaments and the first Senior Open in 1980.
White was 99 years old. He would have turned 100 in September.
