Does Lubbock Need This Driverless Taxi Service?
The future of driving is gearing towards fully electric cars along with fully autonomous driving capabilities. We first saw autonomous cars take off with Tesla, and now it is a feature everyone is expecting from their electric vehicles. Now that self-driving cars are no longer a thing of the future, people are trying to see just how far the concept can be pushed.
Waymo, the world’s first autonomous ride hailing and trucking service is trying to push the limits and find exactly how far we can go with fully self-driving vehicles. They are currently testing their ride hailing service in Arizona, specifically parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Along with testing their vehicles in the East Valley of Phoenix, they are also conducting research out of San Francisco with ‘Trusted Testers’ in the driver’s seat while the car runs autonomously.
While there are no current plans to expand to another city at the moment, they are accepting submissions for people that are interested in becoming a Trusted Tester and want to see Waymo come to their city. While they don’t currently have plans to expand anywhere in specific, their goal is to bring Waymo to as many places and people as possible to provide an alternative form of transportation.
I think this is a great idea and they are handling the testing process extremely well to ensure it is a safe and secure option for those looking for a ride hailing alternative. This is especially valuable in the time we live in where many people are only wanting to use contactless services. I would love to see Waymo eventually make its way to Lubbock, Texas.
