Dallas Cowboys Select Morris Claiborne 6th Overall

The Dallas Cowboys traded up to No. 6 Thursday night in the NFL draft to select LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne.

Dallas started the day off with the 14^th pick in the draft but jumped up eight spots to land a player they apparently targeted early on.

To get the 6^th pick the Cowboys swapped first rounders with St. Louis while sending their second-round pick (45^th overall) over as well. That means Dallas doesn’t have a second round selection and won’t select until the third-round, 81^st overall

Claiborne won the 2011 Thorpe Award, which is given out to the best college defensive back in the nation.

What was a weakness last season has now become a strength for Dallas thanks to the drafting of Claiborne and the addition of Brandon Carr via free agency.

Claiborne finished last season with 51 tackles (32 solo) and six interceptions. He also returned 22 kicks for 553 yards and one touchdown.

He became the first defensive player selected in the first round since fellow cornerback Mike Jenkins in 2008, and the highest player drafted by the Cowboys since 2003 when Terence Newman went fifth overall.
