Capital Pizza Takes Pizza & Beer to a Higher Tier [Review]

My usual disclaimer on reviews: I paid for my own food and Capital Pizza had no idea I was doing a review. I take good food very seriously. I was in no way paid or compensated for this review. 

Capital Pizza is the first and only restaurant/bar in the Tech Terrace neighborhood. And it fits in to that beautiful neighborhood - beautifully.

The ambiance is fun and welcoming, and it's a very comfortable place to hang out with friends. This is not a quick service place, and nor should it ever be, as every pizza is made to order with care.

I started going to Capital Pizza shortly after it opened because I had friends that worked there. But I kept going for the gourmet pies and incredible craft beer selection.

It's been awhile since I went there last (I moved a little further from that neighborhood), but recently some friends and I paid a visit.

The staff opened up the extra backroom to accommodate the eight of us. Our drink orders were taken and delivered quickly. We all ordered different craft beers made in Texas; they were on special for $3. Every can was also served with a chilled pint glass. Between the eight of us, we ordered quite a few. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable about the breweries and flavors of the beers we were ordering.

We ordered a Capital Carnivore, a Thai Curry Chicken Basil, The Rabbit and a pepperoni pizza. I had a slice of everything except for the pepperoni, but my friends said it was delicious. These are all almost knife and fork pizzas -- the cheese is thick and gooey; there's a lot, but not too much, sauce; and an ample amount of toppings.

The Thai Chicken Basil came in a very close second to my favorite. The Rabbit, which has artichokes, garlic sauteed spinach, grilled eggplant, black olives, and mushrooms. The crust on all the pizzas is quite good too, obviously freshly prepared and hand-pulled.

It should be noted that this is not cheap pizza or beer. It's reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of the food you get. They have all of their menu items described and priced online. I've also never had anything less than exceptional service, so budget in a nice tip or order it to go. They also have salads, sandwiches and calzones, which I have never tried because I always go in there hungry for the incredible pizza.

If you're looking for a more upscale but approachable, locally-owned pizza place and bar, Capital Pizza is a perfect choice. It's just far enough away from the Texas Tech campus to not be completely overrun with college students, but still close enough to have that culture present. Needless to say, I'll be back with my friends.
