We're just a couple of days away from the kickoff to the 2011 Texas Tech Red Raider Football team's season. The season opener, September 3 against Texas State, will mark the beginning to the 87th season for Texas Tech football. Texas Tech has been more than impressive in their season opening games as they are 57-26-3 all time. Tech has won eight straight season openers and will look for their ninth straight season opening victory Saturday eveving when they host the Bobcats at six from Jones AT&T Stadium. It shouldn't make for a memorable game but that doesn't mean there haven't been nail biting and memorable season openers for Tech here in Lubbock. Here are our top five Texas Tech football home season openers in Red Raider football history.

    1985 New Mexico Vs. Texas Tech

    32-31 Red Raiders

    It was the final year for head coach Jerry Moore and the Red Raiders needed a strong start. What usually is a fierce rivalry, Texas Tech and New Mexico took the field in front of more than 35K Red Raider fans. The game ended in nail biting fashion with the Red Raiders stealing one point victory in their season opener, beating the Lobos 32-31. It was the beginning of a three game win streak for Texas Tech but was the first of only four wins all season long for Moore and gang. After the three game win streak, Tech would lose seven of their final eight games to finish the season at 4-7 and bring the Jerry Moore reign to an end.

    1989 Texas Tech Vs. #20 Arizona

    24-14 Red Raiders

    Spike Dykes began his third season as the Head Coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders with one of the more memorable wins of his career. Dykes led Tech to a stunning 24-14 victory over the 20th ranked Wildcats and set the tempo for the year as the Red Raiders ended the season with nine wins which was the highest win total for Tech on a season since 1976. The upset victory would also lead to the rise of team confidence and eventually to a victory in the All American Bowl as Texas Tech would claim a big win over Duke.

    2003 Texas Tech Vs SMU

    58-10 Red Raiders

    You might be asking yourself, why is this game on the list? It's simple. This 58-10 win is on the list because it was the victory that started the Red Raiders current eight game winning streak. Since then, Tech has gone on to beat SMU in four more season openers (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010) along with North Dakota (2009), Eastern Washington (2008) and Florida International (2005). This is also the longest current season opening win streak for the Red Raider football team.

    1927 Texas Tech Vs. Panhandle A&M

    62-0 Red Raiders

    Ninety Nine percent of you reading this were probably not remotely close to being alive when this game was played. The season this blowout victory makes the list though is because it's the largest victory margin for a Texas Tech team in school history on a season opener. It's also the most points scored by a Red Raider team in a season opening game. The final turned out to be 62-0 in favor of Texas Tech.

    1973 Texas Tech Vs. Utah

    29-22 Red Raiders

    It was the beginning of one of the best seasons for any Texas Tech Red Raider football team in history. Jim Carlen led the Red Raiders on the field against the Utes and led them to a 29-22 victory. Tech would then go on to win 10 out of their next 11 games, including a 28-19 victory over Tennessee in the Gator Bowl.
