There’s no better time to start planning your summer vacation than right now. And with the heat headed our way, you’re sure to want to spend some time relaxing and cooling off, right? Then why not go tubing down a winding Texas river. Sounds great, but which one?
I’m glad you asked.
Wide Open Country did the research for us and compiled this list of the seven best places to go tubing in Texas.
Just a little over four hours away from Lubbock (and the closest on the list), the South Llano River is perfect for the entire family, with a shorter tube ride and shallow banks for smaller kids to play in.
The Trinity River
One of the unique things about the Trinity River is the “Rockin’ the River Concert Series” that starts in June. Located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, this tubing destination is about a 4-and-1/2-hour drive from Lubbock.
The Medina River
A little farther from Lubbock, at a 5-and-1/2-hour drive is the Medina River. If you enjoy camping, this might be the place for you. Several local businesses are on hand to provide you with tubes, shuttles, excursions...pretty much anything you need to make your trip unforgettable.
The San Marcos River
According to Curbed, San Marcos, Texas is one of the six most romantic cities in the United States. So if you're needing some one-on-one time with your significant other (who doesn't?), the San Marcos River is definitely your place. At 6 and 1/2 hours away from Lubbock, you and your lover can make a weekend out of it!
The Comal River
If you're new to tubing or just prefer a shorter ride, the Comal River may be your thing. However, keep in mind it's a 6-hour drive from Lubbock.
The Frio River
Getting back to the West Texas area, the Frio River, near Garner State Park, is a much longer river. At around a 5-hour drive south of Lubbock, this is an absolute all-day trip with beautiful scenery at every winding turn.
The Guadalupe River
The Guadalupe River comes in at number one, and it's one of the farthest from Lubbock, clocking in at a 6-and-1/2-hour drive. It'll be worth it though, with all of the campgrounds and cabins found in this area.
