The Red Raiders started spring practice this week and it's a brand new year. Flowers are blooming and restrictions are lifting. It truly does feel like the calendar has finally flipped to 2021 after our extended 2020. With the 2021 football season officially underway we have heard from Coach Wells and some student-athletes and have been getting videos of the team working out in t-shirts and shorts for the past several weeks.

With the shoulder pads going on for the first time Monday the Texas Tech social media team released a single highlight from practice and it's the least surprising highlight that I have seen in years.

Confirmed: Behren Morton can throw a football.

Of course, we already knew that. We saw him throw balls while leading Eastland to the playoffs last season. The Red Raiders freshman quarterback got on campus this semester to get a head start on his college career, but is he also getting a head start on the starting job?

In the day two highlight package, the balls in play are carefully cut so the quarterback isn't in the frame. Coincidence? Probably not.

The implication for me here is that Behren Morton is QB1 right now at Texas Tech. At least until Tyler Shough gets to campus and the real QB competition can start. Where is Shough? He's finishing or has finished his degree at Oregon and is on his way to Lubbock to enter Spring Football like Sting dropping in from the rafters in 1998.

Shough joining spring practice at some point was confirmed during an interview Shough had with Inside the Red Raiders and Jarret Johnson, the former Oregon Duck chose Texas Tech over, Arizona, Cal, Michigan, UNLV, Auburn. The Red Raiders were chosen because of his educational needs and because he'll have an opportunity to start, though he wasn't promised the starting job in the recruiting process.

I can almost guarantee the first day that Shough shows up on campus the highlights from practice will show a Sunshine-esque throw down the field to hit a linebacker in the back from 60 yards away a la Remember the Titans.

Until then, get used to Behren Morton's practice highlights. They'll be fun.
