Alt Rockers Gin Blossoms to Perform Raider Alley This Saturday in Lubbock
According to a tweet released the official Texas Tech Football, alternative rockers Gin Blossoms will perform at Raider Alley at 4 p.m. this Saturday, November 12th, prior to the Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Tech game. As a TTU alum, let me take a moment to say WRECK 'EM! Raider Alley is free to attend.
As someone who was a child in the 1990s, I remember Gin Blossoms being virtually inescapable. They were all over MTV, VH1, the radio and if you were trying on clothes at the mall, you certainly heard the Gin Blossoms. Described as "alternative" and "post-grunge" but neither term really gets it quite right. Basically, they are a rock band with tons of pop sensibilities and catchy lyrics, but with just enough pathos and longing to make it relatable.
Their hit album New Miserable Experience had hit after after, including Hey Jealousy, Found Out About You, Allison Road and Until I Fall Away. I know you also remember Follow You Down from the album Congratulations I'm Sorry, as well.
Really, Gin Blossoms should have made many more albums, but the band broke up in early 1997, probably as the ultimate, delayed result of the tragic death of their original lead guitarist and principal songwriter Doug Hopkins in 1993.
Fun Fact: While the band was fighting over who owned the name Gin Blossoms, they played the Depot Warehouse under the name "The Pistoleros", another band from Tempe, Arizona from which one of their drummers Gary Smith originated.
Gin Blossoms are the latest in a series of Raider Alley concerts this year which has included a diverse array of entertainment. Performers are not typically announced until close to game time, so you may want to follow Texas Tech Football to stay on top of who will be in Raider Alley next.
