Lubbock Christian University softball head coach Daren Hays has announced that the Lady Chaparrals and West Texas A&M University have agreed to postpone Tuesday’s doubleheader because of inclement weather. The cold and wet conditions forced the coaches to move the doubleheader to April 26th with a 4 p.m. start time.  LCU will return to action next on Saturday at 11 a.m. by hosting Mid-America Christian University for a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader.

In the meantime the LCU baseball team is in action today as they’re set host NCAA Division III McMurry University at 5 from Hays Field to complete a home-and-home series. The Chaps are 22 and 8 overall on the season, having won four of their last five games and coming off a pair of wins over Mid-America Christian University. LCU defeated McMurry University 6-5 in their first meeting of the season back on Feb. 22nd with a ninth inning home run by Chandler Griffin to help give the Chaps a 14-3 all-time record against McMurry.  LCU is 4-0 all-time against the War Hawks from Hays Field, and again first pitch is scheduled for 5 O’clock.

Local High-school soccer play off action continues tonight as the Lubbock High Boys will square off against El Paso Montwood at 6 from the Grande Communictions Stadium in Midland. The Coronado Ladies soccer team will follow the conclusion of that game as they’ll face El Paso Montwood at 8 in Midland as well.

Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Bill Gillispie has already landed a pair of high-profile junior-college recruits, just seven days after his hiring. Tyler Junior College Forward Jaron Nash and center Kader Tapsoba, visited Lubbock this past weekend, attended the spring football game and then quickly committed to play for Gillispie beginning next season. The two post players had garnered interest from a half-dozen Division I schools between them with Auburn, DePaul and Marquette recruiting Nash, and Tapsoba getting heavy interest from Northwestern, Washington State and California.

In Men’s college basketball news seniors dominated the Associated Press’s All-America team for the first time in five years as Jimmer Fredette of BYU, Nolan Smith of Duke and JaJuan Johnson of Purdue, all of whom are seniors, were joined as first team selections by junior Kemba Walker of Connecticut and freshman Jared Sullinger of Ohio State.

The Big 12 had three All-American Selections as Marcus Morris of Kansas was a second team selection, while Jacob Pullen of Kansas State and Jordan Hamilton of Texas were chosen to the third team. The three Big 12 All-American selections is tied for the most of any conference in the nation.

In women’s college hoops it was a perfect 4 for 4 for Maya Moore as the UCONN star became only the second four-time All-American when she was honored by The Associate Press today. Moore was joined on the first team by Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Stanford’s Jeanette Pohlen, Texas A&M’s Danielle Adams and Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender.

Also, Baylor’s Brittney Griner picked up another accolade today as well as she was named the 2011 National Defensive Player of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

In PGA news the Shell Oil Company has extended its contract with the Houston Open for another five years. Shell has been the title sponsor of the Houston Open since 1992, and the current contract was set to expire in 2012, but with the extension the pack will now run through 2017. The relationship between Shell and the tournament is the third-longest sponsorship arrangement on the PGA Tour, and the event has raised more than $50 million dollars for regional charities during that time - Raising nearly $2.15 million last year alone. This year’s Shell Houston Open takes place Thursday through Sunday from the Redstone Golf Club.
