8th Annual Suicide Prevention Walk to Take Place on Texas Tech Campus October 14th
Reading up about this event, I had a horrible epiphany. I know more people who've committed suicide than passed any other way. It's the cost of being friends with a lot of people, and it's the curse of this generation. In fact, it's right up there with unintentional injuries (read: car wrecks, drowning, etc. and overdoses, combined), cancer and homicide in many age groups over 10 and under 35, according to the CDC.
Clearly, something needs to be done to get those numbers down. That's the mission of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
AFSP is taking a multi-pronged approach to fighting suicide, including education programs, advocacy & public policy reform, prevention research and support for survivors. AFSP's primary fundraising source are the "Out of the Darkness" Walks.
The Lubbock chapter of AFSP will have their fundraising walk Sunday, October 14th at the Frazier Alumni Pavillion on Texas Tech Campus:
Registration: 12:00 pm - 2:45 pm
Opening Ceremony, followed by Walk: 3:00 pmOur walk is proof that when people work together, we can make big changes in the city of Lubbock, and even in our world. By walking, we raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention . The Walk funds resources we need to carry out the AFSP's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
With nearly 200,000 people walking in 350 cities across the country, these walks are AFSP’s biggest fundraiser and the driver of the suicide prevention movement.
For more information, visit the Facebook event page, or head over to the AFSP's Out of the Darkness page.
If you are someone you love is struggling with suicidal thoughts, PLEASE get help immediately. You are too precious to lose. Call 1-800-273-8255 for resources and help.
