#8 Red Raiders Sweep Northeastern Over Weekend
After a disappointing start to the conference slate, losing two out of three games to Baylor, the no. 8 Red Raiders took the field over the weekend looking to make a statement. And what a statement they made.
Texas Tech took all four games from the Northeastern Huskies, totaling 56 runs, which was the most runs over a weekend since 1999 for the Red Raiders. It all culminated with a 9 to 4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders got off to a quick start on the very first pitch, with Gabe Holt launching his third home run of the season over the right field wall, giving Tech a quick 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Zach Rheams sent a two-run shot off the scoreboard, his fourth home run in five games, to extend the lead to 3-0. Cameron Warren would then get in on the home run derby, sending a two-run shot of his own to then make the score 6-0 after three innings.
Texas Tech would add three more runs in the 6th inning, culminating with a Josh Jung two-run home run. It was the fourth home run of the day for the Lubbock team and grew the score to 9-0. This would be all the Red Raiders needed to coast to a victory.
Junior pitcher Ryan Shetter would get the start for the Red Raiders. However, he wouldn't get the decision, pitching three innings of scoreless work. Shetter only allowed two hits on the day, walking two batters and striking out two.
Fellow junior right-handed pitcher Ty Harpenau would pick up the win, improving him to 3-1 on the season. He tossed two and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits while striking out five batters. Caleb Freeman came in after Harpenau and earned his third save of the season after pitching the final three innings, striking out three.
The Red Raiders were supposed to take on New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Tuesday, but that game has been rescheduled at a later date to be determined according to texastech.com
That means the next series for the Red Raiders is a three-game home set against conference foe West Virginia, beginning Thursday evening at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m CDT.
