On this date 27 years ago, sports history was made in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ron Hextall made NHL history by becoming the goaltender to score a goal by shooting the puck into an opponent's empty net.

The Flyers were hosting the Boston Bruins at the Spectrum. Philly was up 4-2 late in the third period when the historic moment occurred.

Boston pulled their own goalie for an extra attacker. After a little bit of up-and-down play. Hextall took possession after the Bruins dumped the puck near his goal. He launched the puck down ice and the puck bounded through the Boston defensive zone and skidded into the goal, just inside the right post. Video from NHL.com shows the celebration that broke out onto the ice after Hextall's goal.

Hextall ended up duplicating the feat again in the 1989 Stanley Cup Playoffs. His second career goal came as the Flyers beat the Washington Capitals on April 11, 1989.

He now currently serves as the Philadelphia Flyers general manager.
