It happens more often than a presidential election, but the Kansas Jayhawks Football team will have a new leader in Head Coach David Beaty to start the 2015 season.

Beaty takes over a reeling Jayhawk program after spending the previous three seasons with Texas A&M as Wide Receivers Coach. Since the Jayhawks fired Mark Mangino in 2009 they have gone a combined 12-48 with Turner Gill and Charlie Weis at the helm.

2014 record: (3-9 overall, 1-8 Big 12, 9th)

Offense

The Jayhawks will install the “Air Raid” spread offense this season with questions at nearly every single position. The quarterback situation is murky with 2014 starter Michael Cummings going down with a knee injury in April and unproven junior Montell Cozart in the mix. The running backs position is the deepest portion of the offense with seniors Taylor Cox and De’Andre Mann returning to the backfield. Throw into the equation that there will be three new starters on the offensive line and it could be awhile until the offense comes together.

Offensive players to keep an eye on in 2015:

Michael Cummings, Quarterback (5-10, 212 lbs., Senior)

Jordan Shelley-Smith, Offensive Line (6-5, 296 lbs., Junior)

Defense

The Jayhawks defense returns only two starters from their 2014 defense which finished 106th in total defense giving up 453 yards per game so a fresh start could be a blessing in disguise for this beleaguered program. With no returning starters in the secondary it could ugly in the pass happy Big 12 again for the Jayhawks in their 3-4 multiple defense.

Defensive playmakers to keep an eye on in 2015:

Courtney Arnick, Linebacker (6-2, 207 lbs., Junior)

2015 Prediction: 1-11 (0-9 Big 12, 10th place)
