Americans are ready to kick off summer and they are ready to kick off traveling once again.

Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us and traditionally it has been a busy travel weekend in the United States. For many, it's a three-day weekend which is a perfect amount of time for a weekend trip, and if you take Friday off, that just adds to the relaxation time.

Of course this time last year, most Americans were at home. Travel was discouraged or even banned in some states. The coronavirus pandemic had killed vacations and the unofficial kickoff to summer never happened. Even traditional Memorial Day events like parades and remembrances at cemeteries were cancelled.

But all of that is expected to change this weekend. Millions of Americans are vaccinated and cases of coronavirus have dropped across the United States. AAA is predicting a 60% increase in travelers this year. They expected more than 37 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend. While that number is a rebound, it's still millions short of how many traveled before the pandemic.

According to the AAA website, millions of Americans are planning on taking road trips this weekend to various destinations. The top road trip destination this Memorial Day weekend according to AAA is Las Vegas. Seems like there are a lot of people who are ready to gamble, eat, and see the sights and sounds of a city that was basically closed this time last year.
