The family and friends of Mark Anthony Ysasaga have been petitioning LISD to have him recognized at Coronado High School's upcoming graduation ceremony. He would have graduated this year. Now, we have a small update on the situation.

According to the Change.org petition:

Ok so I've just recently found out that LISD CAN stop students from carrying anything such as a picture or other items as they walk the stage. But CAN NOT stop parents and other people from holding up a picture of Mark or any other student that has passed away during the time when his name would have been called or at the beginning, end or at any point during the ceremony. I would like to as anyone that has signed the petition who will be attending to print a picture of Mark or any other student who has passed and should be graduating and bring with them and hold it up in remembrance. We will be taking this to a state level so please continue to sign and share this petition.

In other words, while students can't carry anything across the stage with them, audience members can hold up pictures of students who aren't there. This petition needs a few more signatures if you'd like to add your name to it as well.

Lubbock ISD rejected the request for Ysasaga to have a chair at graduation, citing that the district "must look at the broader perspective of not only Mark's family, but all students who have lost their children and also the impact on graduates being honored at commencement."

The school district has offered to hold a moment of silence for Ysasaga and other students who've been lost.

Mark Ysasaga disappeared in June 2012. His body was discovered three years later.
