The Big 12 Baseball Season Might Feature 4 Game Conference Series

Texas Tech Baseball had serious potential last season. Serious go to Omaha and win the whole dadgum thing type of potential. Before the ball truly got rolling though the season was cut short just shy of the Red Raiders starting Big 12 play. The Red Raiders had started 16-3 and had their arms rolling when West Virginia suspended all travel on that now-legendary March 12th, 2020.

As much as it pains the memory to think back on what could have been last season, it's even easier to get excited about the season coming back. Most of the lineup is returning with the main exception to that being longtime 2nd baseman Brian Klein. Even with the amount of talent moving on from the rotation and bullpen the recruiting class and transfers coming in make you feel like you are right where you need to be for another big season.

We'll preview the Red Raiders more in-depth later on, the more pressing news is what the schedule will look like in 2021 for the team. Last week, Kendall Rogers of d1baseball.com reported that the Big 12 was looking into a conference schedule that would feature four-game sets between conference opponents every weekend instead of three-game sets that the Big 12 has used in the past.

It looked like the Big 12 was set to make the decision official before the SEC announced that they would have zero changes to their schedule and move on, business as usual.

Texas Tech baseball expert Dinger Derby's Keith Patrick adds that the Southland has also announced their schedules for the upcoming season. The Sam Houston schedule includes Texas Tech still competing at the Shriners College Classic.

The Big 12 will likely announce their decision early next week with a conference schedule likely to follow. If it's the 4-game series schedule, the Red Raiders schedule will be mostly done with very few non-con games needing to be added last minute. If the Big 12 decides to move to a "normal" schedule the Red Raiders announcement will be delayed for several weeks.

Though, if Tim Tadlock had his way the Red Raiders would have a schedule announcement the morning of the first game. Regardless of the schedule, I'm just excited to see this incredible group of talented ball players get back on the diamond.
