Silent Wings Museum to Celebrate Armed Forces Day
Coming up later this month on Saturday, May 15, the Silent Wings Museum will be celebrating Armed Forces Day.
If you're not familiar with the Silent Wings Museum, it is located in north Lubbock on the east side of Interstate 27 at exit 9 at 6202 North I-27.
For this year's Armed Forces Day, the Silent Wings Museum will be offering free admission to past and present members of the military, and their family members, who accompany them to the museum.
The Silent Wings Museum tells the story and honors the history of the U.S. Army's World War II military glider program. Many of the glider pilots trained at the location of the current museum, when it was the South Plains Army Air Field. After WWII the building became Lubbock's airport terminal building. The Silent Wings Museum opened in Lubbock in October 2002.
One of the centerpieces of the Silent Wings Museum is a restored WACO CG-4A glider. This model glider was used for both training and in missions in the European Theater of World War II.
The Silent Wings Museum is now open during its regularly scheduled business hours, which is: Tuesday-Saturday: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Sunday: 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and closed on Mondays and during City of Lubbock Holidays.
The wearing of masks and face coverings is no longer mandated for those in attendance at the museum, but tours, rentals, and other group events will still be structured to allow for safe distancing for those in attendance.
Armed Forces Day was created in August 1949 under the direction of President Harry S. Truman and Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson. Armed Forces Day replaced individual days to honor the U.S. military branches of the time: Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force.
