Neymar converted a penalty kick, and Brazil beat Germany to win the gold medal in soccer in Rio on Saturday afternoon. The capacity crowd at the Maracana erupted with a deafening roar when Neymar buried his penalty kick past German goalkeeper Timo Horn, giving the football-crazy host nation its first Olympic gold medal in men's soccer.

An early goal by Neymar gave Brazil a 1-0 lead at half, but Germany’s Maximillian Meyer netted a ball past Brazilian keeper Selecao in the 58th minute to knot the score. The game ended 1-1, setting the stage for Neymar’s heroics.

Nigeria beat Honduras, 3-2, for the bronze medal.

Allyson Felix anchored the United States' 4x400-meter relay team to the nation’s sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event on Saturday night. Felix, Courtney Okolo, Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis finished first in 3 minutes, 19.06 seconds. Jamaica took silver, and Great Britain earned the bronze.

Jamaica's Novelene Williams-Mill was within a few steps of Felix when the runners took the batons for the final leg. Felix pulled away down the stretch to earn her sixth career Olympic gold medal — the most by any female track athlete. Her nine overall medals equaled the career total of Jamaica's Merlene Ottey for the most in women’s track and field history.

The American men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Arman Hall, Tony McQuay, Gil Roberts and LaShawn Merritt won the gold medal in a time of 2 minutes, 57.30 seconds on Saturday. Jamaica charged hard at the end of the race to take the silver, and the Bahamas earned the bronze medal.

Great Britain’s Mo Farah won the men’s 5,000-meter race on Saturday, giving him a second straight double-double; he won the 10,000-meters earlier this week. Farah won both races in London in 2012, too. He became the first man since Finland's Lasse Viren in 1972 and 1976 to accomplish the feat. U.S runner Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo won silver, was subsequently disqualified, but then re-instated late Saturday night. Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia earned bronze.

American Matthew Centrowitz ran the 1,500-meter race in 3:50 on Saturday, becoming the first U.S. runner since 1908 to win the gold medal in the event. Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi won the silver, and New Zealand’s Nicholas Willis took the bronze.

U.S. athlete Gwen Jorgensen won the women’s triathlon in a time of 1:56:16 on Saturday, becoming the first American ever to win the gold medal in the event. Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig took silver, and Great Britain’s Vicky Holland earned the bronze.

Diana Taurasi and Lindsay Whalen each scored 17 points, and the U.S. women's basketball team routed Spain, 101-72, to win its sixth consecutive Olympic gold medal. A 16-3 run in the second quarter all but decided the game. The American team has now won 49 consecutive games in the Olympics.

As a result of the win, Taurasi, Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings joined Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as the only basketball players in history with four Olympic gold medals.

Serbia beat France, 70-63, in the bronze medal game.
