Over the weekend, the City of Lubbock announced that mask mandates inside city-owned facilities would go away. This means you don't have to wear a mask at City Council meetings or at events at the Civic Center unless the people putting on the event ask you to mask up.

While city-run facilities no longer have mask mandates, that doesn't mean you can go mask-free everywhere.

According to a recent press release, the end of the mask mandate does not cover where the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) takes over. In other words, if you're traveling on Citibus or going to the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, you better have a mask with you.

For Citibus:

  • transit operators must require all persons to wear masks when boarding and disembarking Citibus vehicles, and for the duration of travel
  • persons must wear masks at the transit hubs and shelters
  • the mask requirement also covers Citibus charters for private events
  • in accordance with CDC guidelines, passengers age two and under and those who are medically exempt under the ADA are exempt from wearing a mask

For travelers at LPSIA:

  • for domestic and international travel, travelers are required to wear masks at airports and on aircrafts
    • this includes at TSA screening areas, checked baggage and other TSA controlled or dedicated areas
  • in accordance with CDC guidelines, passengers age two and under and those who are medically exempt under the ADA are exempt from wearing a mask

The TSA requirement for masks will remain in place around the nation until September 13th, 2021.
