Lubbock High School Once Had Elvis AND Buddy Holly Play There (Long Before I Was There, Of Course)
I graduated Lubbock High School (barely) in the 1990s. (Trying to not date myself too much.) That school has some stories to tell!
The beautiful old building on 19th Street has seem some serious history throughout its years. When I went there, I was on the yearbook staff and we had an original copy of the yearbook that Buddy Holly was in. Plus, I was there when Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines was there. We had choir together, actually.
I was also in some theater classes, so between that and choir I spent a lot of time in the auditorium. That room alone has seen more history than anywhere else on campus (and more action, too.) And now, a rare old film has popped up that shows something truly legendary.
The Facebook update states that it was shot backstage in the Lubbock High School Auditorium in 1955 and features the performers at a concert there. Those performers were Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Presley.
