Just hours after it was announced that Southwest Power Pool had downgraded to EEA Level 3, leading to Lubbock Power and Light (LP&L) initiating rolling blackouts throughout the City of Lubbock, things are returning to normal.


LP&L followed up in a tweet saying that the Southwest Power Pool informed the company that they could stop the outages for now. However, the City of Lubbock and the Southwest Power Pool remains on high alert and future rolling blackouts are possible:

Residents in Lubbock and across Texas are urged to conserve electricity. According to an earlier story from KFYO News, here are some tips on how to conserve electricity.

  • Set thermostats to 68 degrees or lower.
  • Suspend use of electrical appliances (dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, vacuum cleaners, etc.)
  • Put off tasks at work, if possible, that would demand electricity (power tools, maintenance equipment, etc.).
  • Turn off televisions and electronic equipment unless they are necessary to conduct business or to ensure your health and safety.
  • Turn off unnecessary lighting, leaving on only enough to move about safely indoors.

Officials are expecting strains on the power grid through Wednesday as temperatures across the state of Texas will remain below freezing much of Tuesday and Wednesday.
