According to an online survey by SimmRim Law Group, every single day, over 37 people die in drunk-driving crashes across the U.S., and 32% of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol. But if you live in Texas or New Mexico, you’re facing some of the worst statistics in the country.

According to a recent study, Texas ranks as the second-worst state for drunk driving, with a jaw-dropping 42% of its traffic deaths linked to alcohol.
That means nearly half of all fatal accidents in the Lone Star State involve someone who’s had too much to drink. Right behind Texas is New Mexico, where 33% of traffic fatalities are alcohol-related.
And it’s not just about numbers:
It’s about lives. In 2022, more than 13,500 people across the U.S. were killed by drunk driving, many of them in Texas and New Mexico.
It’s a problem that’s hitting these states hard, while other regions—like the Northeast—are faring much better thanks to stricter DUI laws and more public transportation.
