Hurricane season may be less severe this year for Texas.

Colorado State University Issues Its First Projections for 2026

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season looks to have slightly below average activity. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Colorado State University (CSU) hurricane research team says the primary factor for this less active forecast is the development of a moderate to strong El Niño in the Pacific. As these waters grow significantly warmer than usual, they generate upper-atmospheric winds over the Atlantic. This creates a vertical wind shear that makes it difficult for tropical storms to organize and intensify.

Mixed Signals in the Atlantic

While El Niño provides a suppressive force, sea-surface temperatures in the Atlantic are sending mixed signals. The western Atlantic, including the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, is running warmer than the long-term average, conditions that typically fuel storms. However, the eastern Atlantic remains slightly cooler. This "tug-of-war" between atmospheric wind shear and warm water fuel has led researchers to emphasize high levels of uncertainty in this early April outlook.

Thirteen Named Storms

The CSU team is calling for a total of 13 named storms during the six-month hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 through November 30. Of those projected storms, researchers believe six will reach hurricane strength, with two expected to become "major" hurricanes with maximum sustained winds exceeding 110 mph. This forecast sits just below the long-term historical averages, which typically see 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The Early Forecast Is Likely to Change

While the CSU forecast has been highly regarded since its inception in 1995, some forecasters caution that early April outlooks carry a higher degree of uncertainty than later updates. The official outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is typically released in late May. Despite the lower numbers, meteorologists emphasize that it only takes one storm making landfall to make a significant impact.
