Texas Tech has officially revealed how they will continue to honor former University President Clifford B. Jones and his wife, Audrey. We knew for some time that the university was deliberating on how to keep their name alive following the renaming of the football stadium, and we now have our answer.

The short answer is no, Galaxy Stadium is not going to change its name. However, in a recent announcement from Tech Athletics, the student section will now be known as "The Jones Student Section at Galaxy Stadium."

In the sold-out Red Raider Club Kickoff Luncheon at the Civic Center, TTU Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt emphasized the impact that Jones and his wife made over 100 years ago on the university.

What Did Clifford B. Jones Actually Do?

For many, the name "Jones" is synonymous with the stadium and nothing else, not knowing the history of its namesake.

Clifford B. Jones was a key figure in Lubbock who was monumental in advocating for a state college in West Texas. A member of the very first board of directors for Texas Technological College in 1923, Jones eventually became the institution's third president.

Fun fact: Clifford B. Jones, despite being president of Texas Tech, never actually earned a college degree himself.

Throughout his five years as president (1939-1944), Jones helped elevate the university to the third-largest in the state, so keeping his name alive is very important for Texas Tech University.

Don't forget to keep up with the Red Raider football schedule this season, and keep in mind that student game attendance policies have changed.
