Senator John Cornyn Announces Run For Senate GOP Leader
It's official. Senator John Cornyn is running to succeed Mitch McConnell as Senate GOP Leader. Cornyn is the first to officially announce his intention to run, though more candidates are likely to step forward.
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday announced that he would step aside as Leader in November. McConnell held the title for a record long 17 years.
In a statement, Cornyn said that the Senate was "broken" but he could fix it. Cornyn also pledged to improve communication, increase transparency, and "include every senator's expertise and opinion". Cornyn also said he would end backroom deals and rushed votes on legislation according to FOX News.
"We will restore the important role of Senate committees and reestablish the regular appropriations process, rather than lurch from one crisis to another. And we will return power back to our members; there will be no more backroom deals or forced votes on bills without adequate time for review, debate, and amendment," Cornyn pledged.
There are two other Senators who, along with Cornyn, are the most talked about candidates for GOP Leader. Senator John Thune of South Dakota and Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming are likely to announce campaigns according to several media sources.
