Former Councilman Randy Christian Dies After Long Cancer Battle
The City of Lubbock mourns the loss of former Councilman Randall "Randy" Christian who died while in hospice care on Sunday, October 11. He was 74 years old.
Randy Christian on City Council
Christian ran unopposed for Lubbock City Council District 5 in 2018, holding the seat until 2022 when he lost the election to Dr. Jennifer Wilson.
During his time on City Council, Dan Pope served as Mayor after winning re-election for another term.
Randy Christian joined KFYO several times during his time as City Councilman, most notably in 2022 when he joined the morning show to discuss Lubbock's crime statistics, gang numbers, and traffic violations.
Randy Christian's Cancer Diagnosis
Randy Christian had battled cancer for much of his life, having had his first health scare when he was just eight years old. He mentioned, in an interview with KCBD, that cancer ran in his family due to a genetic mutation called Lynch syndrome.
As a result, he had his colon removed while in his 30s due to cancer, and he received another diagnosis just before being sworn in as city councilman in 2018.
As of February 2026, Christian, a three-time cancer survivor, was battling two diagnoses at the same time—stomach and esophageal cancer.
He refused surgery to remove the tumors, instead opting for hospice after having a long, painful conversation with Margaret, his wife of over 45 years.
Randy Christian had been receiving hospice care prior to his passing on October 11 at age 74.
