David Dean the owner of Joyland Amusement Park in Lubbock has died. According to a Facebook post, Dean passed away on Monday. Dean had battled cancer but his wife believes the sale of Joyland "broke his heart".
In 2022, the Dean's announced the Joyland would not reopen. There was a glimmer of hope that Joyland could return when a buyer approached the Dean's about purchasing Joyland, but the sale fell through. After the buyer backed out of the sale, the Dean's began the process of auctioning off the rides. Much of Joyland still stands. Below is the Facebook post that was on the Joyland page.
Joyland was opened in 1973 and Dean's wife thanked the Lubbock community for their support of Joyland and the family.
