Big Changes Could Be Coming For Marijuana In Lubbock

A local petition could be starting some change to marijuana in Lubbock.

A local group started this petition to help decriminalize. The petition has now surpassed its signature count goal needed to put the proposal to a vote in front of the Lubbock City Council.

It was initiated by the Freedom Act Lubbock and needed 4,800 signatures to meet the city charter’s requirements. Instead of meeting that goal they almost doubled it. The petition is at almost 9,000 votes and counting.

Just because they hit the goal doesn't mean they are going to stop. The Freedom Act Lubbock says they have one week (Oct. 17th) left to turn it in to the city council. They hope to have 10,000 signatures when they turn it in.

Citizens can still sign the petition up until the deadline. If the city council rejects the ordinance, it will go to voters in November. If passed in November it will decriminalize low-level marijuana possession in the City of Lubbock.

Freedom Act Lubbock will host an event for those interested in collecting additional signatures to be included in the final count. They will be at Mano Negra Brewing Company on Saturday, Oct. 14th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Freedom Act Lubbock will also be at several events around town collecting signatures until the deadline.

**City Ordinances do not take precedence or replace the Texas Penal Code. Possession of marijuana will still be illegal in Lubbock if passed.
