Lubbock: These are Three Questions You Should Ask If You Get Fired
Although the height of layoff season is technically behind us, there is always a risk of being terminated. No matter how good of an employee you are, how long you’ve been working there, or how loyal you are to the company, you could still be at risk.
Especially when living in Texas, an ‘employment at will’ state, you can be fired for any reason, at any time, with no notice. This means you could be the ‘perfect’ employee, but they have to cut someone and you fall victim. However, there are still certain things that qualify as wrongful termination, including race, religion, age, or disability discrimination.
Knowing that, there are three important questions suggested by an Employment Law Attorney that you should always ask if you are fired.
The three questions ask:
- Why am I being fired?
- When do my benefits end?
- What does is my severance package?
Not only is this all important information to know, but they are also things that can be used to form a case against the company if you feel that you have been wrongfully terminated.
While it can often be abrupt and shocking to be pulled aside and terminated, it is important to take your time to get the information you need. Even if they are trying to move things along as quickly as possible, you deserve answers and respect for your time.
I hope this is never something you have to use, but be sure to keep it in mind just in case. For more detail, watch the Employment Law Attorney explain things himself.
