Tyler Fire Station 2 Is Getting a Major New Facility

(Tyler, Texas) Say goodbye to the current Fire Station 2 in Tyler. The firehouse that was built in the 1970s is scheduled to be demolished and replaced with a new facility. The current fire station will be replaced with a new facility that will meet and exceed the needs of modern-day firefighting. The new building will also give firefighters additional space they need for living in the firehouse, along with all the necessary equipment.

Why Is Tyler Replacing Fire Station 2?

Fire Station 2 is located on the corner of Old Bullard Road and Rieck Road. Driving by this three-bay firehouse, you can tell it's an aging facility. Over the last decade, the Tyler Fire Department has been replacing, updating, or relocating firehouses throughout the city. It's about time this firehouse gets the attention it needs, along with an upgrade.

What Will the New Tyler Fire Station Include?

The new firehouse will sit on the current site and will be capable of housing three fire trucks. Firefighters will no longer have to back fire trucks into the station. The new facility will initially have three bays, including two drive-through bays, with the possibility of expanding to four bays if the site allows.

The current property also appears to leave little room for firefighters to park their personal vehicles while on duty. To help with this issue, the city has acquired an adjacent empty lot on W Rieck Rd that will be combined with the current site, giving contractors more room for the new station.

New Fire Station Will Give Tyler Firefighters More Space

Once complete, Fire Station 2 will include living quarters for 11 firefighters, including officers and a Battalion Chief. The new facility will also include separate locker rooms and restrooms, personal protective equipment storage, a decontamination room, a self-contained breathing apparatus room, storage areas, and administrative offices.

There will also be a training room that will accommodate up to 40 people for training sessions and meetings. The living quarters will include an open-concept living area with a kitchen and dining area, and a fitness room. The improvements are designed to support firefighter health, safety, and daily operations.

How Will the New Station Help Firefighters Respond Faster?

Plans also call for improvements to the traffic signal at the intersection, including emergency vehicle preemption technology that could help firefighters reach emergency scenes more quickly.

How Much Will Tyler Fire Station 2 Cost?

The replacement of Fire Station 2 will cost $740,470 and will be funded through the Half Cent Sales Tax Fund.
