(Tyler, Texas) One thing drivers really enjoy while running errands, heading to work, or going on a road trip is smooth, bump-free roads. It would be extremely nice to drive on freshly paved and striped roads all the time, but we all know that is not the case. Roads are expensive to build and maintain.

Why Tyler Roads Need Repairs

East Texas roads, whether city, county, or state-maintained, are constantly requiring attention. Traffic wears them down over time, and then there's the utility work, too. Utility companies cut access holes in the street to get to water, sewer, communication lines, and other infrastructure to make repairs to their lines. Then those companies come back and fill in the hole they created, and that's where the bumpy ride begins.

In Tyler on Hollytree Drive, between Rieck and Rice Roads, in front of the condo community, contractors have cut into the asphalt in three places. When they completed the work and filled in the job site, the road is no longer level; it's more of a speed bump now. That bump is pretty noticeable, especially when you're going at the posted 35 mph speed limit.

We all can complain about road conditions in our neighborhoods and on our commutes. The City of Tyler recently awarded a $3.7 million contract with Reynolds and Kay for an Asphalt Enhancement Project in Tyler. This project will enhance about 20 miles of neighborhood streets around Tyler this summer.

What the Asphalt Enhancement Project Includes

The job entails removing the top layer of asphalt and replacing it with a new, smoother surface. This work will extend the life of the roadway and reduce maintenance costs.

When Road Work Will Begin and End

Work is expected to begin this month, April, and should wrap up by the end of November. Not all problem areas are going to be covered, but it's a start. Some citizens were curious why roads in the northern part of the city weren't being addressed. That’s because additional utility work is planned and could require cutting into new asphalt. Then repairs could result in some unintended speed bumps like on Hollytree Drive!
