SFA Campus Legend Made Old Stone Fort A Place Students Avoided

It's been a while since we talked about the Old Stone Fort Museum on the SFA Campus. After all, it's been about eight months since we put up a post about whether it would be removed to make space for the new science building, or if it would be left where it currently stands. Regardless of how you feel, there's another piece of the Old Stone Fort Museum that no one has brought up recently.

The Legend About Students Going into Old Stone Fort

There is a legend that is taught - or at least WAS taught - to incoming SFA students that said that if a student went into the Old Stone Fort, they would never graduate. Now, you can take that as grimly as you want, whether you think they're saying that the student would drop out of SFA, or if something especially tragic would happen to them.

All I know is that the legend is something that was discussed with students coming to Nacogdoches during orientations, and it's something that the students took to heart.

Who Knows the Origin of the Old Stone Fort Legend?

Now, I will say this: I never did hear the exact reason that the legend ever came to light. I don't know if there's some historical event that took place to bring it about, or if something was said once upon a time, then a decades-long game of "telephone" transformed that saying into something entirely different.

I would think that if people really wanted to keep the Old Stone Fort where it is, they would have worked a lot harder to squelch this old story. However, on that same note, I would think that anyone wanting to move the Old Stone Fort elsewhere would want to use this legend - real or not - to their advantage.

Is the legend true? Maybe. I didn't set foot in there until after I graduated, but it wasn't out of fear. I just never had a reason to go in. What about you?
