Deep East Texas Heat Is Pushing Past 100°, Check on Your Pets

Here in Deep East Texas, it's hot outside. There's no doubt about that. I could give you the standard advice - drink lots of water, don't overdue it outside, make sure that you eat something before working in the heat - things like that. And yes, those things are absolutely important. But there's one more thing that lots of people don't think about as much.

Make Sure To Check on Your Pets in This Heat

We're expecting for temperatures to go over 100° this week. And we've still got months to go before we start to see any sort of real cool-down. If you've got pets, especially outdoor ones, make sure that you're checking on them. Make sure that they're hydrated and that they've got food. And something else, make sure that they've got some way to get out of the sun.

When I say that, I would recommend making sure that they've got some sort of open-air shade. Whether it's a tent, or they have access to a large shade tree or bush, it doesn't really matter. If you're just depending on something like a doghouse, that's not always the greatest idea. Those enclosed spaces can really heat up, and without air circulating, they won't do your pets much good.

Also, make sure that the water that they have access to isn't scalding hot. It doesn't take much for the water to heat up in these temps, so make a point to change it out a few times a day, and keep it in the shade, not direct sunlight.

I say all that to say this: Make sure your pets are looked after in this summer weather. Don't let them get too hot, and make sure that they've got what they need to make it through this heat. If you can't make it through it without some assistance of some kind, they for sure can't.

And I'm not even a die-hard animal rights activist. I'm just a guy that owns a dog. Just sayin'.
