What Lubbock Locals Keep in Their Cars And Trucks, 365 Days A Year
If you are like me, your car/ truck is a little extension of your house and a huge reflection of your personality and where you live. If you are one of those folks who can keep your car pristinely clean, I truly respect that, but for most of us, we have a little "junk in the trunk," and I don't mean that figuratively. Regardless, in this area we have to keep some essentials in our vehicles- or catch ourselves unprepared.

You Never Know When the West Texas Weather Will Strike
The wind can whip up nearly without warning. This is why anyone with long hair will have multiples of hair ties (I prefer scrunchies, easier to find and less likely to snag in my wind-blown hair). I also try to keep a bandana in my car, too, in case it gets really dusty; I can cover my face. Real cowboy stuff here.
Too much sun can be no fun, which is why I always have a pair of prescription sunglasses with me, and I usually have sunblock in my vehicle as well. And a really cute Snoopy dashboard cover in case I have to park in direct sun, too. Even in Fall, it can get really toasty if it sits in the sun.

You probably also have 2-3 hoodies or light jackets from when it was cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon, and you forgot them in the backseat.
Rain? We don't keep umbrellas in our vehicles. We get drenched instead. I think we are so grateful for when we do get rain that we just accept getting soaked. But we do have an ice scraper for the 2-3 days it snows; then it becomes a life-saving tool.
The Pile Of Totally Necessary Freebies
Got extra napkins in the drive-through? That pile is going in the glove box. You never know when you'll need to blow your nose, because the allergens here are a total menace. I also have my free promotional hand sanitizer bottles to use on my hands, and the locally branded water bottle full of tepid water for just-in-apolocalyspe-case. A utensil pack that's just missing the fork but still has the spoon and knife? Yes, we might need that someday.
The Really Prepared Guy
Some of you have jumper cables, a compressor to air up tires, a jack, coolant, and all manner of roadside essentials. You either have a high-maintenance car, or you are just really prepared. I respect that.
A Lot Of Us Have It, But Don't Leave It Behind
Okay, cowboys and girls, you may have a weapon in your car. That is very not unusual around these parts. However, I am strongly encouraging you to not leave it in your vehicle when you are not there, as that is what people who break into cars are looking for. And if you have anything valuable or that looks valuable, take it with you- because you definitely don't want a busted window, too.
