Why Slaton, Texas, Is Well Worth the Short Drive from Lubbock
I'm a big fan of the little town of Slaton (population: 5,634) and the wonderful businesses they have there. It's a very short drive from most parts of Lubbock, through what I find to be scenic and charming farmland (depending on your route). If you are looking for some small-town whimsy (and prices!) near Lubbock, Slaton is a great place to go.

The Slaton Bakery Is Always Worth The Trip
The historic Slaton Bakery not only has a wide variety of delicious, freshly made, and expertly prepared baked goods, but it also has a robust "mercantile" section of jams, jellies, etc., and some prices you have to see to believe. In fact, go ahead and see these cake prices!

$25 for some of the best cakes you'll ever try is an incredible bargain, and the employees are sweet, helpful, and really quite patient as you deal with your decsion paralysis- seriously, there are almost too many goodies in the case, and it can be agonizing to pick.

Texas 1809 Is So Fine
Instead of heading right back to Lubbock for lunch, we decided to try Texas 1809 (and get a few photos with the nearby train engine). The food was not only very reasonably priced, but the portions were huge, and the food was so unique and delicious! The massive pretzel was one of the very best I've ever had, served with a delicious stone-ground mustard AND beer cheese (thank you so much for not making me pick!)

We also tried the Rueben omelette, the German Boy breakfast, and I had the Jagerschnitzel, which was decadent and oh-so-satisfying. I think it healed my body and my heart a little bit. The service was beyond excellent and very friendly.
New Things To Try In The Future
I'm very excited to go back and try more Slaton businesses, like The Combine (which was not open yet for the day when we got there). Truly, Slaton has a lot to offer in such a small space (even the gazebo at the park is so nice!). It's well worth the short drive for a little small-town escape.
