The end of an era came crashing down Wednesday when the Furr's Fresh Buffet off South Loop 289 between University and Indiana was demolished.

Lonestar 99.5 radio personality Kelsee Pitman took video of construction crews tearing down the building that many thought would never come down. Throughout the day, the thousands who traveled the South Loop were able to see Furr's fall to the ground with their own eyes.

Wednesday evening, some Lubbock residents, including Hillary Creek, stopped by the site across to pay their respects and remember the good times they had at Furr's. They set up a makeshift candlelight vigil, complete with a recorded video near the site of the demolition. No doubt they had fond memories of the buffet, the choices of food and, of course, the desserts.

Below you can see video of candlelight vigil at Furr's from Wednesday night.

The story of Furr's in Lubbock was once a story of multiple locations and packed diners.

Furr's actually began in Hobbs, New Mexico in 1946 and was called Furr's Cafeteria. In 1969, Furr's opened a pie shop in Lubbock. Over the last few years, Furr's struggled to attract new customers, and when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, like so many restaurants Furr's was eventually forced to close the doors of its final location in Lubbock in March 2021. One month later, Furr's owners filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.

No word yet what will be taking the spot of the Furr's building that is being demolished. Who knows? Maybe it be a pie shop or another place to eat.
