Texas Tech Baseball held a 1-0 lead for 7 innings, but a 3-run Texas 8th helped the Longhorns win Sunday 3-1 and win the Big 12 Conference series 2 to 1.

David Paiz was 2 for 4 at the plate for the Red Raiders while Brennan Stewart made is starting debut for Tech pitching 7.1 innings giving up a run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 5 Strikeouts.

Red Raider left-handed reliever Ben Flora issued a full-count walk to Lucas Kephart to put runners at first and second base. Brandon Loy, the Longhorns leadoff hitter, then singled off Tech reliever Jerad McCrummen to tie the game, scoring Montalbano.

McCrummen brought Tech closer to escaping the inning with a groundout to shortstop for two outs, before Tant Shephard tripled down the left-field line to score two runs, giving Texas a 3-1 lead. The Red Raiders received their first base hit since the fourth inning when trying to rally in the ninth as Reid Redman singled to right field with two outs, but it wouldn’t be enough as Texas closer Corey Knebel struck out Jamodrick McGruder to end the game.

Tech falls to 23-15 overall and 6-9 in Big 12 play at a tie for 6th place with Baylor while Texas keeps pace with Texas A&M at 11-4 in a tie for 1st and a 27-9 overall record.

Texas Tech returns to action Monday against Texas State at 6:30pm from Bobcat Field in San Marcos.
