Lubbock Christian University women’s basketball head coach Steve Gomez announced his coaching changes for the upcoming season and two new individuals join his staff, as Vic Self will serve as volunteer assistant coach and Clarissa Krum will serve as a graduate assistant coach.

Self is a longtime familiar face to basketball around the South Plains.  He spent 25 years coaching basketball at Lubbock’s Monterey High School and 20 years as the head coach of the Plainsmen boy’s basketball team.  Self is no stranger to LCU.  The Portales, New Mexico native lettered in basketball and tennis at Lubbock Christian in 1980-1981, after spending two years at Eastern New Mexico University.  His first coaching job was as an assistant coach for John Copeland on the Chaps basketball staff.  In two decades at Monterey, Self compiled a 416-237 record, four district titles and 13 playoff appearances.  Monterey made trips to the state tournament in 1991 and 1992.  He rejoins Gomez, but in a reversal of roles.  Gomez served as an assistant for Self from 1988-1996.  Self resigned from coaching basketball in 2008 and has coached boy’s golf at Monterey until retiring this past spring.

Krum joins the Lady Chaps staff after recently completing her degree in Psychology at Howard Payne University.  She began her college basketball career at Eastern New Mexico University in 2007-2008 before transferring to Howard College in 2008 and eventually HPU in 2009.  Krum played two seasons at HPU, and she led the team in rebounds averaging 6.3 per game and was the second leading scorer averaging 9.3 per game her senior season. She also led her team to an ASC Conference Championship and to the second round of the NCAA Division III national tournament. She also received Second Team All-Conference Team for the American Southwest Conference.  Krum is a native of Los Lunas, New Mexico.

Gomez is preparing for his ninth season at the helm of the Lady Chaps and they have made eight consecutive trips to the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Gomez’s eight seasons coached. Remaining on his staff for his second season as an assistant coach is Caleb Henson. The Lady Chaps completed the 2010-2011 with an elite eight finish and a 23-10 final record.
