The Barbed Wire Open Mic, A Refuge For Artists In The Borderland
When you’re part of something as special as the Barbed Wire Open Mic, it’s easy to get caught up in the magic of it all—the art, the camaraderie, the undeniable buzz of creativity. But when someone else takes notice and helps share that magic with a broader audience? That’s a feeling like no other.

I want to take a moment to thank ARC El Paso and KFOX14 for the story they put together about our open mic series. Their article (and the accompanying video!) captures the heart and soul of what the Barbed Wire Open Mic is all about: creating a welcoming space for artists of all kinds to share their talents, tell their stories, and connect with the community.
Their piece not only highlights our recent milestone—celebrating another BWOMS day and the gift of fostering artistic expression—but also gives viewers a glimpse into the passion and dedication that keep our stage alive and thriving. From musicians and comedians to poets and performers, the Barbed Wire Open Mic has been a space where anyone can step into the spotlight, and it’s incredible to see that journey recognized. I also have to give a huge shoutout to Richie D. Marrufo, the Project Director for the Barbed Wire, who has been running the show, mostly on his own, for years!!
I’ve only been a part of this open mic for a little over a year, but as I shared in the KFOX14 interview, it has quickly become one of the most fulfilling parts of my life. Giving my time and energy to this event feels like second nature because I wholeheartedly believe in what we’re doing: supporting artists and uplifting their voices.
If you haven’t yet seen the video, I highly encourage you to check it out. KFOX14 did a phenomenal job capturing the energy of our events and the spirit of our community. You’ll see clips from the stage and, hopefully, feel inspired to join us. Whether you want to perform or just soak in the talent, there’s always room for you at the Barbed Wire Open Mic. Visit our website to see when the next show is happening!
To KFOX14—thank you for believing in what we do and for helping shine a spotlight on the Borderland’s longest-running open mic series. To everyone else, you can read their article and watch the video here. Let’s keep building this beautiful community of artists, together.
