
El Paso Warming Centers: Stay Safe and Warm During the Freeze
With temperatures dropping to dangerous lows, the City of El Paso and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are opening warming centers to assist residents, including those who may lack adequate heating or want to save on utility costs. These facilities are vital for the homeless, disabled, and elderly community members who need a safe, warm place to stay. Here’s where to find help and how to stay safe.

1. Recreation Centers Serving as Warming Centers
Recreation centers across El Paso are offering warmth and shelter. Operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. These centers are closed on Sundays:
- Valle Bajo: 7380 Alameda Ave.
- Marty Robbins: 11600 Vista Del Sol Drive
- Galatzan: 650 Wallenberg Drive
- Nations Tobin: 8831 Railroad Drive
2. Libraries Opening Their Doors
Libraries also double as warming stations during cold weather. Hours are Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 1 to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They remain closed on Sundays. Available locations include:
- Armijo Library: 620 E. 7th Ave.
- Dorris Van Doren: 551 Redd Road
- Jose Cisneros/Cielo Vista: 1300 Hawkins St.
- Memorial Park: 3200 Copper Ave.
- Richard Burges: 9600 Dyer St.

3. Cold Weather Safety Tips
The OEM reminds everyone to take these precautions:
- Wear multiple layers of warm clothing.
- Stay indoors as much as possible. If you go outside, limit exposure.
- Keep hands, feet, and head covered.
- Stay dry to maintain the effectiveness of clothing.
- Drive carefully on potentially icy roads—slow down and keep a safe distance.
