Oh, here we go again, El Paso. Just when you thought your wallet had been through enough, here comes El Paso Electric with a little reminder that electricity doesn’t come cheap—especially if they get their way. In case you missed it, they’ve officially filed for a rate increase that could boost your bill by a whopping $22, or a mere 75 cents a day. Sure, that’s a small change, right? That’s just enough to cover your morning coffee, or your five-minute scroll through social media while pretending not to notice your increasing electricity bill.

And what’s the reason behind this? Well, according to Kelly Tomblin, the president and CEO of EPElectric, they’re working hard to "strengthen the power infrastructure." How nice. Apparently, all this hard work to keep up with the "growth" in the Borderland comes with a price tag—your electricity bill. Gotta keep those lights on, even if it’s a little too bright for our budgets, am I right?

But don’t worry, El Paso Electric has kindly provided a list of "tools" to help us save energy and money. Oh, sweet relief—tools like turning off the lights when we leave the room and maybe reconsidering that extra hour of air conditioning. These are the simple things we’ll have to embrace while our bills creep up, because who doesn’t love a good "personal responsibility" moment from a monopoly?

And don’t get me started on the city’s reaction. Mayor Renard Johnson is deeply concerned about the impact this increase will have on residents, which is great and all, but how about some action? A few words of concern are nice, but it’s going to take more than that to ease the burden on El Pasoans who are just trying to keep their homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter without having to sell their kidneys.

So, El Paso, brace yourselves. This rate increase might be a done deal by next year, or maybe not—but until then, let’s all just keep pretending that 75 cents a day is no big deal while our electric bills slowly balloon into an amount we’d rather not talk about. Cheers!
