If you live in the Midland-Odessa area, you've likely heard the horrific story from earlier this week about a 15-year-old boy who took the lives of a mother and two young children.

This disturbing act shook the entire Permian Basin.

While I usually focus on more optimistic stories, this one was too important to ignore. This isn't about the crime itself, but the community coming together to support the family.

A Tragedy That Shook Two Small Cities

Support and concern for the incident quickly spread throughout Odessa and beyond.

Many people were angry and saddened, questioning how a young boy obtained a weapon.

Many left thoughts and prayers, and others expressed genuine concern over such a horrific event.

GoFundMe Campaigns Established to Assist With the Funeral Costs

This particular situation has made me take notice. The people of Midland-Odessa are often stereotyped as being gritty or rough around the edges.

However, this situation alone shatters that misconception. Donations from all over the state and surrounding areas have poured in, and multiple GoFundMe campaigns have been established to assist the family with funeral costs.

I am doing this in memory of Jessica, Kiley, and Jacob, who were such significant parts of my life. They meant everything to me, and their loss has left an unimaginable void. -Bobby Rodriguez

Today, a young boy took the lives of my 9-year-old son, my 13-year-old daughter, and their mother, who was my ex-wife.  I am not a person who ever asks for help from anyone, but at this time, I don’t have a choice. -Roy Martinez (Father)
